True Confessions of a Nutrition and Wellness Counselor...
Nourish: verb. 1) To provide with food and other substances necessary for growth, life. 2) To foster the development of; promote. 3) To keep alive, maintain.

People often assume that because I'm a Nutrition and Wellness Counselor that I must eat like a saint and exercise everyday…These people are very wrong.

Yes, I'm a yoga chick who loves cheeseburgers (organic, humanely raised and grass-fed 99% of the time)...I also have a weakness for the occasional awesome slice of pizza with a fountain coke (Ben's in NYC or nothing). Yes, I see the irony...but life is filled with the ironic. I'm not perfect, nor would I ever want to be; and if you run into someone who claims they are, I guarantee you they are being less than forthcoming.

Let’s start by saying that just because you know what you SHOULD do...doesn’t mean that you’re going to do that 100% of the time. I’m not super-human, and I don’t have super-willpower that keeps me from eating chocolate or cheeseburgers. I don’t eat salads and drink green juice all day - although I love them both and they do make up a good portion of my diet. I’ve been known to have a few drinks on occasion, and sometimes a few more than a few. I've  given in to the late night munchies, and more than once I’ve finished an entire pint of ice cream - by myself - in one sitting. Do I feel badly afterward? Sort of...OK, yes, but getting back on the wagon from which I fell is the key. It’s all about balance.

The reality is that we can’t be expected to be “good” all the time. Sometimes being “bad” can be just as good for you. A little indulgence now and then can do wonders for your state of mind.

TRUE WELLNESS IS ABOUT CHASING THE BALANCE...

What I do to chase my balance every day:

Yoga / Gym - I aim for at least 5 times a week (most weeks...sometimes I only get in twice). So good for my body and so good for my sanity!

Vitamins Everyday I take at least Vitamin D3, B Complex and zinc. These keep my energy up and my immune system in fighting shape.

Sleep I get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. I cannot stress how important this is. Sanity, stamina and health are intricately connected to how much sleep you get per night. Naps ROCK!

Fresh fruits and vegetables. I don’t take a multi-vitamin. Most of them never get absorbed fully anyway. If you need to, then make sure it's a whole-food based liquid multi. The best way to get your nutrients are from real fresh fruits and vegetables - organic whenever possible. Your body recognizes and utilizes their nutrients immediately.

Doing these things allows me to indulge and still keep on track. If I have a good breakfast and a big salad for lunch, I can have that burger or pasta for dinner once or twice a week. If I go to yoga diligently, those homemade cookies I might have for desert won’t tip my scales.

Find what works best for your body. No one diet is right for everyone. Some people do well being a vegetarian. Some people do well eating red meat. It’s all about what makes your body (and mind) feel good and stay healthy. It takes some trial and error, but listen to your body and it will tell you everything you need to know.
